5 Signs Your Catalog Has Outgrown Your Search Bar

Your search bar may not be broken. Your store may have outgrown traditional search.

When shoppers struggle to find products, the natural response is to improve search:

  • Add filters.
  • Reorganize categories.
  • Tune rankings.
  • Introduce more synonyms.

Those are all worthwhile improvements. But sometimes the problem is not search itself. The catalog has simply become too complex for keyword-based shopping.

Search works for known intent

Traditional search works when customers already know what they want. They enter a product name, SKU, brand or model number, and search retrieves the closest match.

It doesn’t work so well when shoppers come with questions like:

  • Which one works best for my setup?
  • What is the difference between the X and Y models?
  • Which is the best gift?
  • What would work in my small apartment with two dogs and a cat?

Those are not really searches. They are conversations.

A search engine matches words. A good salesperson understands the customer’s intent, asks follow-up questions and explains the trade-offs. That is a meaningful difference.

Five signs your catalog may have outgrown traditional search

  1. Search results often overwhelm shoppers.
  2. Customers want to describe problems and use cases.
  3. Common questions phrased in plain language produce “no results found.”
  4. Support teams repeatedly answer the same pre-purchase questions.
  5. Visitors browse, but still do not purchase.

These are signs that shoppers need a guide, not a bigger search grid.

From finding products to choosing the right one

The next generation of product discovery is not only about helping people find products. It is about helping them choose the right product.

That is what we are working toward at Chatsi. Shoppers should be able to explain what they are trying to accomplish and receive useful guidance based on their needs, context and the merchant’s catalog.

For merchants selling technical, specialized or high-consideration products, the opportunity is to offer something a search bar was never designed to provide: conversational guidance, 24/7.
